Readers Theater Jennifer Campbell.
Readers theater is a language arts class that is both theater and reading. It’s like radio theater without the radio. Or like regular theater without the complicated sets, props and costumes. In readers theater, the scripts, based off of real books or stories, are divided into many speaking parts. The parts are not memorized. Instead, the actors read the parts out loud. The main goal of readers theater is to develop fluency in readers. We learn to read with proper intonation, pausing where indicated by punctuation. It gives students a real reason to read out loud. As students read and re-read their parts, they are able to practice all the elements of reading: fluency, cadence and expression. It also can spark an interest in reading the “complete” book or story. Students want to perform their part well as it’s part of the group or team effort. It’s my hope that this class with greatly improve students’ reading ability, but also their interest in reading on their own (or even out loud to others).
In addition, I hope that we can read about historical people, events and topics, while creating our own props and crafts along with some of the books. It won’t be all reading – it will be reading with lots of other fun sprinkled in! (Note for parents: Most parents are concerned that their child will be frustrated or doesn’t read “well enough” for this class. The intent is for the teacher to gauge the students’ individual reading levels and choose appropriate roles to challenge and encourage the students without being overwhelming. The scripts will be worked on over a few weeks of class time and homework will be to practice the scripts at home with a parent or older sibling. Ideally, students should already be reading at a first grade or second grade level or above. If the script your child receives is ever too much, please let me know!)

Team Building: Jenn Campbell
This class will include art projects, STEM activities, and other activities to encourage COOPERATIVE LEARNING and not just group work. Each week, the class will be divided into groups by the teacher, who will then work together to create a project with a different objective. Sometimes the project must be completed quickly (a ring made out of Pringles), while other classes, patience, ingenuity, and design are the goal. Some projects may require artistic thinking (make a sculpture out of pool noodles and duct tape). Each week will be something unusual that requires thinking and group participation:
Make the tallest tower possible…out of plastic silverware.
Make and race a “puff mobile” using office supplies and Lifesaver wheels.
Bake a batch of cookies with your “mute” and “blind” partners.
Build a tower out of post-it notes or index cards.
Make a catapult out of the supplies provided to your group.
Some weeks, you might not be allowed to talk, other weeks you might need to complete a task while blindfolded. Get ready to put your thinking cap on, as this class will encourage lots of creative thinking and fun!
Teamwork is a skill that will be required no matter your job or ambition in life, whether to work in a corporation or taking care of your kids at home.

Discription soon
Reading Shakespeare an be intimidating and even overwhelming. What if you could study Shakespeare in a fun and interactive environment with your peers under the guidance of a seasoned teacher? In this class, we will read a sampling of some of Shakespeare’s greatest works from his sonnets and poetry to his tragedies, histories, and comedies. There will be opportunities to act out the plays as they were intended, look at the history fo the Elizabethan theater, research the background of Shakespeare’s life and the Globe Theater, and discuss/analyze the plays from a historical perspective. Students will be expected to do some reading and note taking outside of class. There will be at least one to two essays and a final project assigned for this class. I am hoping to plan a field trip for our group to the American Shakespeare Theater in Staunton, VA in the spring. Tentatively, I plan to cover a few sonnets/poems and a blend of the following play: Macbeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Merchant of Venice. I plan to be flexible with how many plays we’re able to cover, but my goal is at least 4-5.
Civics Alicia Novell 6-8th
Civic education empowers us to be well-informed, active citizens and gives us the opportunity to change the world around us. It is a vital part of any democracy, and equips ordinary people with knowledge about our democracy and our Constitution. It teaches us how we communicate, plan, and execute the change we desire.
When we aren’t prepared to find this voice, ask the questions, and learn our role in the community and democracy, we miss out on a major opportunity to be part of something meaningful. In learning civics together we cultivate critical thinking and empathetic listening.

No previous language learning or French language skill is required.
